Assassins Creed Odyssey: My Thoughts and Opinions
With the announcement of the next Assassin's Creed game, Assassins Creed Valhalla. I decided to delve back into Ubisoft’s world of Assassins and secret societies and try out playing Odyssey. Now I don’t have the greatest of knowledge about the Assassins Creed universe since the last time I got the chance to play it was back when Revelations was released.
Now to start off with I have to say that the story, on the whole, was amazing, it was immersive, emotional and exciting. I have for a very long time loved ancient Greece and Greek mythology and to experience that in this game was something I thoroughly enjoyed. I loved the characters and their personalities and the fact that you got to have conversations with famous people of the ancient greek world like Sokrates (famous philosopher) or Hippokrates (famous physician). Not to forget how beautiful the ancient Greek landscape and architecture was, that it pulled you into the world.
With the game you get to choose between a male (Alexios) or a female (Kassandra) character for your story, this is where I started seeing a couple of problems. For instance, both of these characters share the exact same storyline it is literally just changing the gender of the character, that wasn’t the issue, however, I feel like the story as a whole was meant to be Kassandra’s because more effort was put into her development, both character model wise and the voice actress was by far better. Alexios’ voice actor was painful to listen to because you couldn’t take him seriously.
Unfortunately, as much as I loved playing this game for the story and the history that was all around, there are quite a few flaws to the game that made it very frustrating to play and hard to continue playing at times. To start off with I found that the further I went on and the higher my skill level got, the more problems I encountered that started making the game a bit of a drag. For example, I found that once you got past level 12-ish the bounty system gets ridiculous and very sensitive to anything that you do that could be deemed as wrong added with the fact the assassinate option got a lot harder since I found that the button decides to stop working at crucial moments. It seems pretty redundant to call this Assassin Creed if you aren’t able to covertly assassinate enemies.
Other issues that I found with the game was the cost to upgrade gear and your ship was a stupid amount of money and resources, forcing you to grind just to stay ahead, the romance options were clique and abruptly ends with sex or having the NPC join your crew (where you can no longer speak to them), the autopilot on the horse is as useless as the horse is itself and the complete lack of a minimap on the HUD was frustrating, to say the least. And the biggest kicker of all was that when you managed to finish all the stories, you find that the game just abruptly stops with no satisfying end because the rest is locked behind a paywall and labelled as DLC.
In the end, all the faults in this game took it from a fantastic game down to just an okay game, many points I found myself angry and frustrated with it, wondering why I’m still playing and at other points, I was so immersed and hanging onto everything that was going on. I’m someone who doesn’t mind a bit of a grind, but this game took it too far. The story was beautiful but incomplete since you are expected to fork out an additional exorbitant fee just to find out what happens next. I want to know what happens, but it’s just not worth my money.
Final Rating: 8/10
